Air Force Academy Singing Group Moves on to next Round of 'Got Talent'
NBC's "America's Got Talent" might be changing its name to the Air Force Academy's got talent.
Or at least that is the hope of the all-male a capella cadet singing group In the Stairwell.
The 16-singer group performed on the show Tuesday and moved on to the next round. The talent show features performers such as dancers, singers, comedians, magicians and others of all ages who compete for a million-dollar prize.
"We're very proud that they will be appearing on 'America's Got Talent,'" Air Force Academy spokesman Meade Warthen said.
Show producers watched In the Stairwell's Youtube broadcast and presented it to NBC executives, said Lt. Col. Kris Codne, Air Force entertainment liaison, in a recent AFA news release.
They went to Los Angeles to perform in front of judge Simon Cowell and will now be performing in front of a nationwide audience.
"I know everyone at the Academy was excited that they had been selected to be on the show," Warthen said.
The group was formed in 2004 by freshmen cadets who sang together in the only place they could -- in the stairwell. "We feel they represent the best and the brightest of the cadets that we have here at the Academy," Warthen said.
In the Stairwell's harmonies range from contemporary hits to the National Anthem and unite like cadets marching in formation.
The group performs music for official functions and entertainment on base and in the community, as stated on the group's official Facebook page.
As for their performance on a stage in front of an audience and celebrity judges Cowell, Howie Mandel, Mel B and Heidi Klum, the Academy, community, friends and famililes of the singers have high hopes.
"We think it will go very well," Warthen said about the performance. ___
