City Names Street After Fallen Marine

    Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and Senior Councilman Anthony Santino were joined by the family and friends of a Marine from Oceanside in unveiling Lance CPL. Gregory T. Buckley Drive on Saturday, August 10th, the one year anniversary of his death. The commemorative sign dedicating Greentree Drive was placed at the corner of Greentree Drive and Dot Court East in Oceanside. The men and women of the United States Military are making great sacrifices on a daily basis to ensure that all of us live in peace and freedom, said Murray. Gregory Buckley made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and should be remembered as a hero. Buckley lived on Greentree Drive, just a few feet from Oceanside Park and the intersection that will now bear his name. Greg was a regular at the park, where he was frequently seen on the basketball courts. A graduate of Oceanside High School, Greg finished his career there as a basketball star. he joined the Marines shortly after graduation, when he was just 17-years old. Buckley was deployed as a logistics and facilities adviser as part of an Afghan National Civil Order Police Garrison Advisory Team attached to the 3rd Battalion 8th Marine Regimental Combat Team 6, 1st Marine Division. He was stationed in Helmand province in Afghanistan at the time of his death. The 21-year old Buckley was scheduled to return home to Oceanside for a visit with his family just days after his death. Buckley received numerous awards including the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation and NATO International Security Assistance Force Afghanistan Medal.
